How do celebrities diet?

Movie stars, TV anchors, top models and singers nowadays all look like gods - perfect legs, slim waists, cool hairstyles, tanned bodies. Their beauty appear so effortlessly begotten, you’d think. Don’t be deceived! Aside from a minority, all have had to work hard for their appearances. Dieting and workouts are part and parcel of the life of any high-powered star. Because if you don’t look right, you won’t get contracts and soon you’d be out of the publics’ hearts and minds. That’s life in Hollywood.

And in any place where money and ambition meet, where there are plenty of people trying to push this or that idea as being the ‘best thing since sliced bread…’, many celebrities do fall for the wrong stuff, because celebrities are just like the rest of us and have hard times finding diets that work. Since we’re all somewhat different from one another, no single diet can possibly work the same way for everyone, which means that one has to try various eating plans in order to find which one is best. And the search can get a bit rough sometimes.

What are their secret diets?

Celebrity model Claudia Schiffer, for example, eschews any kind of diet. She’s tried many and has finally concluded that diets are messing up her metabolic rate and that she’s better with a three-meal-per-day plan. Meals that are rich in vegetables and fruits, for fast digestion by the body. She also tries hard not to resort to snacks during meals. But she does give in to temptation now and then eating a bit of chocolate or some other ‘forbidden’ food. The crucial thing for her is not caving in and eating a whole box of sweets for example.

The 3 meals-per-day-vegetable-and-fruit diet is also the basis of Geri Halliwell’s eating plan. Having gone through excessive exercising and a succession of bizarre diets, Geri had decided she’d had enough and turned to what she calls “sensible eating”. Now she’s part of a growing trend of celebrities who’d rather have a nice set of curves to show than a skinny figure. So, having a bit of fat here and there is no longer a problem to her, meaning she can be less stressed about the whole dieting thing.

TV presenter Claire Sweeney finally chose the Weight Watchers diet precisely because it let her eat the foods she liked, and which other diets forbade. Prior to that, she tried going through a detox plan which she could not stick to, an Atkins diet that gave her a kidney infection and a dozen other dieting ideas. Weight Watchers worked for her better than anything else and so she’s sticking to that program.

Star actress Gwyneth Paltrow had previously been on a macrobiotic diet plan for many years, that excluded meat, eggs, dairy products and caffeine. She had stuck with it until her recent pregnancy. After her daughter Apple’s birth, Gwyneth returned to a similar eating plan, but one not as strict as before. While still avoiding energy draining foods, she discovered that having a relaxed attitude is better than having a bean pole look.

What's next?

After the era of the ‘excessive ‘90s’, the ‘stick figure’ is now gradually growing out of style. Increasingly, more celebrities find that maintaining a healthy balance between their cravings and their image is better than trying to reach an unreasonable beauty standard through denying themselves of their favourite pleasures. And this seems not to be a bad approach at all.
